Hex Cryptic Crossword — NP 220115 (Cox and Rathvon)

Note to Readers
Following an announcement one week ago that due to copyright concerns the blog would no longer post a copy of the Cox and Rathvon puzzle, Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon (the setters of the puzzle) reached out to the blog indicating that they do not object to the blog posting a copy of the puzzle to which they own the copyright. Out of respect to the interests of the National Post, we have mutually agreed that the blog will delay posting a copy of the puzzle until one week following its appearance in the National Post. You can read more about this decision and the events leading up to it at An Exciting New Development. I am sure the hundreds of Hex fans who visit the blog every week join me in extending our sincere appreciation to Emily and Henry for their gracious gesture in allowing the puzzle to continue to be posted on this blog.

  1. A very good morning to everyone from NYC where not only is the temperature in the teens but my local New York Public Library has provided me access to today's and future offerings from C&R!

Can I suggest that we continue to use this comment section to discuss the current C&R puzzle? It hasn't seemed to be the case in the past that our comments have spoiled the solving experience for anyone. We seem to come here after our solve or at least when we're at the point of looking for some help. I'll leave a comment or two later if there seems to be a consensus as to how best to use this comment section.

As for now, I'll work up a draft of my comments on today's puzzle (refraining from the use of any Morse Code of course (see 11a and 23a)).

As for our Falcon, thank you so much for your diligence in securing all permissions to keep this site up and running. My guess is, if you were ever asked who you would have as three dinner guests if you could choose anyone from history, two of them might very well be Emily Cox and Henry. Rathvon. I think they'd be high on my list.

    See you all later.

    1. Glad you're still with us, Richard

As for comments, it might be best to keep those pertaining to the content of the puzzle with the review of the puzzle to which they pertain rather than have them spread over two posts. In the past, I would initially post the puzzle and later add the review to the same post meaning there was only a single post per puzzle. However, going forward, there will be two posts per puzzle -- the first will contain the review of the puzzle and the second (posted a week later) will contain the puzzle itself.

  2. I'd agree with our host that it'd be awkward to spread comments over two weeks, rather than stick to the posted rather than print puzzle. Anyhow, glad this worked out, and the week's delay seems an eminently fair solution. Besides, my own effort last week to make the puzzle legible in print wasn't terribly sophisticated.

  3. Good morning,

I very much enjoyed today’s challenge from Emily and Henry. The spelling of the second word in 5d threw me off for a bit. I’m not sure how we get the middle letter in the answer to 19d but it was nice to see the encyclopaedist make an appearance. The answer to 6d is a nice, but mild, description of the deeds of those found in the answers to 26a and 27a. I had to look up the first three letters of the answer to 10a to confirm my answer. My last in were 16d and 21d. Is the symbol for chlorine “CI” or “CL”? The reference to resin in the second part of the clue reminded me of Poland where it is found in abundance. Are you still out there Henry?

The answer to 4d reminded my of one of my favourite arias. You can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnlA3LD7duU

    Have a good weekend!

    1. Peter,

You posted this comment about the time I posted a blog entry for this week's puzzle (NP 220122). I have copied it there to keep it together with the other comments on that puzzle. I will respond to it there.
