  1. Good Saturday morning to all! Thanks for posting, Falcon. Which way shall we go today? Not an easy one by any means. Typically didn't figure out the parsing until I figured out the answer. Had to have a lot of help from the cross letters. Liked 8d (it was one of my favourite tv shows). Well, best of luck to all - I'm off to write a law exam.

  2. Entertaining puzzle, moderately difficult, with some amusing clues.

As our resident pedant is on vacation, I will point out that it was Ruth, not the other woman in that book, who was David's great grandmother.

Good luck with the exam, Henry.

    1. Thanks for that, Richard - it was not as difficult as I thought it might have been. I guess everyone is on holiday this weekend (or flummoxed as Sydney says).

  3. I had to sleep on this one. The upper right had me flummoxed. As soon as I solved 13a everything fell into place. At least I had another puzzle to work on in the meantime.

  4. A tougher-than-usual one for me as well, mainly because of the two corner anchors. It took me a long time to crack 1a, my last one in; and after the fact, I had to look up the first of the pair making up 29a, a new name to me. My favorite was the food for "mass" consumption.

  5. Well, no more idylling around for me, here is the solution to this week's puzzle.

    ACROSS
    1a M(ANTLE R)OCK (ANTLER = horn) (MOCK = disdain)
6a IN+|CA (could also be considered a hidden answer?)
    9a C|(OGNACS)* (C = Combo's leader - first letter of Combo) (anagram of CONGAS)
    10a RO(B LOW)E (ROE = caviar) (BLOW = to buffet)
    12a WITCH˜ (homonym on which = that)
13a ENNOBLING* (anagram of LEG IN BONN)
14a _AWFUL (LAWFUL = Legal, with first letter removed)
    16a CHIPPER (double definition)
    19a SHE|A+|RED (SHE = that lady)
    21a POSER (double definition)
23a IM+|PE|RILED (is the 'Island' not required?)
25a WA(FE)R (FE = chemical symbol for Iron) (a wafer is what is given out during Mass)
    26a ANTONY|M (M = short form for Married)
    27a I|M(PALE)D (MD = Doctor)
    28a TUN<|A+ (NUT = loon, reversed)
29a KAIS|ER ROLL (KAI Winding was a Danish-born American trombonist and jazz composer) (ERROLL Garner was an American jazz pianist and composer)

    DOWN
    1d MA|CAWS
    2d NEG(OT|I)ATE (NEGATE = to VOID) (I = idea's start, first letter of idea)
    3d LEA(S)H (LEAH was Jacob's first wife)
4d RUSSELL˜ (homonym of rustle) (Bertrand Russell, 1872-1970, was a British philosopher, among many other things)
5d CH(RON)IC (RON Howard, born 1954 is an American filmmaker and actor)
7d NAOM<|I (I have no idea about the genealogy of David) (MOAN = to complain, reversed)
    8d AV(ENG)ERS (AVERS = States, says)
11d BOB|BINS (BOB = to go up and down)
15d FORT|RAN (the programming language I used in University - is it still around?)
17d PORTFOLIO* (anagram on OF PILOT OR)
    18d ASPIRANT* (anagram on PARTISAN)
20d DIL|EMMA (DILL with last letter removed [mostly]) (EMMA = Austen heroine in the novel Emma)
    21d PAD|DIES (PAD = to Stuff)
22d BRIDAL˜ (homonym of Bridle = to express resentment)
    24d PIT|ON (PIT = stone of a fruit)
25d W(IPER)* (W = short form of With) (anagram of RIPE)

Well I found this one a bit more than 'moderately difficult."

  6. Henry,

Thank you once again for posting the solution.

Re 6a: It is not a hidden word as there is no hidden word indicator (the word "in" being part of the fodder). Also, I believe a hidden word would start in the middle of a word in the clue.

Re 23a: PE is the two-letter postal abbreviation for Prince Edward Island (thus explaining why "Island" might appear to play no part in the wordplay).

  7. Thanks, Falcon - I have to remember the Postal codes for the provinces, it doesn't come naturally to me.
