Saturday, July 2, 2011 - A Tip of the Slung

Introduction

Today's  puzzle from Cox and Rathvon is full of spoonerisms. A spoonerism is an error in speech or deliberate play on words in which corresponding consonants, vowels, or morphemes are switched (see metathesis). It is named after the Reverend William Archibald Spooner (1844–1930), Warden of New College, Oxford, who was notoriously prone to this tendency.

  2. Help, Help Help;
    We are avid crossword doers and have recently tried the National Post Cryptic Crossword but the paper we buy on Saturdays in Ridgeway, Niagara Region Ontario, has no resemblance to the solutions and dates provided here. Is there a different version for this region?
    Whats going on?
    Thanks
    Colin

  3. The National Post does publish regional versions, but I would suspect that the primary difference between these versions may be regional advertising content. The Digital Edition that appears on the National Post website at http://digital.nationalpost.com/epaper/viewer.aspx is the version of the paper distributed in Toronto. It differs from the version we receive here in Ottawa primarily by the inclusion of a Toronto Section and it also has a more extensive Sports Section. It may have a few additional pages and sometimes an article appearing in the Ottawa edition will be replaced by an advertisement in the Toronto edition. However, the Diversions page is always identical in the two papers (aside from the page number sometimes varying between the two editions).

    During the summer months, the National Post does not publish on Monday. The Saturday edition contains both the Saturday Diversions page with the Cox and Rathvon Cryptic Crossword and the Monday Diversions page with a Cryptic Crossword syndicated by the Daily Telegraph.

    I certainly can't imagine that the National Post would publish a regional version with a different cryptic crossword puzzle. I would suggest that you examine your paper carefully and verify that you were not looking (for instance) at the Monday Diversions page published in the Saturday paper.
