Saturday, August 3, 2019 — Odd Or Even

Introduction

In today's puzzle from Cox & Rathvon, the roll of the dice (5a) comes up odd or even. There also seems to be a bit of an artistic and musical sub-theme to the puzzle (11a, 7d, 9d, 19d, 25d).

Thank you to Henry for posting the solution (see the Comments section below).

I invite you to leave a comment to let us know how you fared with the puzzle.

  1. Good morning,

I found today's offering to be a bit more challenging than others of late. Last one in was 13a. Nice to see 7d and 19d put in appearances. Have a good weekend!

  2. Hello Falcon and friends,

Oddly (or not?), I did not find today's puzzle too challenging. My favourite was also my last one in - 5a. I got tripped up by the false anagram indicator (dance around) but LOL'ed once I caught on.

Thank you for posting Falcon and have a nice weekend everyone.

    Cheers,
    MG

  3. This was a quick one. Thought I was doing the daily fast one from England because I was breezing through it. Then I realized it was the NP. LOL'ed.

  4. Good Saturday to all! I also didn't quite breeze through this one, although it was not that difficult. Took a bit of time to work out the parsing for 3d and 12a (my last two in). The rest were straightforward (in a cryptic way). Nice to see 27a put in an appearance.
Favourites - 1d and 8d. 8d because that what I often do with parsing I can't quite get.
And, as MG says - thanks for posting, Falcon and have a nice long weekend everyone.

    1. Further to MG's comment, there is something odd and even about this puzzle.

    1. Henry,
Thank you for posting the solution. I have just one minor clarification for 11a where the parsing is I (one) contained in (among) an anagram (eccentric) of ANCESTOR. The 's (a contraction of "is" in the cryptic reading) serves as a link word between wordplay and definition.

  6. Hello Falcon and all,
This was a tougher one than usual for me, as well. It took me two sessions, with an overnight rest, to finish this one. Interesting that this time we posters had difficulty with different clues; I had trouble with 1d, 21d and 29a. A groaner was realizing I'd missed the anagram in 14a. Favorite: 15d. Must remember: legislators are MPs, not Reps (1d).
