Across

1a   Author of Jurassic Park // upset rich Catholic men (7,8)

A nice anagram but could the clue possibly be more of a gimme?

15a   College in Dublin // — try keeping in it (7)

TR(IN|IT)Y — TRY (†) containing (keeping) {IN (†) + IT (†)}

Trinity College[7] is the sole constituent college of the University of Dublin, a research university in Ireland. The college was founded in 1592 as the "mother" of a new university, modelled after the collegiate universities of Oxford and of Cambridge, but, unlike these, only one college was ever established; as such, the designations "Trinity College" and "University of Dublin" are usually synonymous for practical purposes. It is one of the seven ancient universities of Britain and Ireland, as well as Ireland's oldest university.

WAR(FAR)E — WARE (good) containing (about) FAR (distant)

I did eventually find the right solution — but only after having first invented the mythical indigenous people of the Caribbean known as the BULALS.

The Chicago Cubs[7] are an American professional baseball team located on the North Side of Chicago, Illinois. The Cubs compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a members of the National League (NL) Central division; the team plays its home baseball games at Wrigley Field.

Scratching the Surface

Scratching the Surface
Methodist[3] means relating to Methodism, a Christian Protestant denomination originating in the 18th-century evangelistic movement of Charles and John Wesley and George Whitefield ⇒ it is next to impossible to swerve a determined Methodist from his inspired path.

The Methodist Church grew out of a religious society established within the Church of England, from which it formally separated in 1791. It is particularly strong in the US and now constitutes one of the largest Protestant denominations worldwide, with more than 30 million members. Methodism has a strong tradition of missionary work and concern with social welfare, and emphasizes the believer’s personal relationship with God.

  1. Good morning all,

It's always nice when 1a is a long answer and is immediately apparent. I enjoyed today's puzzle, especially 4d.

I didn't think 'dish' meant gossip (20a)and I wouldn't have thought that the answer to 22d is a 'nuclear unit'.

And I wasn't keen on 6d. I didn't like the fact that 'drum' is in the clue and the answer. Could have been better.

    Thanks to C & R.

    Don't forget: time changes tonight.

    1. Dish is an informal North American term meaning (as a noun) gossip and (as a verb) to "distribute spiteful gossip" or "share intimate information".

In Britain, the dish is an informal term for Information which is not generally known or available.

In military terms, a cadre forms the nucleus of a larger mobilization and in that sense is a "nuclear unit".

I agree with your assessment of 6d.

  3. Hi Chris,

Yes, I'm quite sure 24d was in a puzzle just a few weeks ago.

  4. Hi Falcon and everyone-
As noted, this was particularly easy, I was stuck only on 10a (looking for words starting with IGN).
I liked your comment, Falcon, on the mythical team, the Bulals. I am not a sports fan particularly and don't know that much about team names, so when I hit 21a, the word BUICKS came to mind. Never mind that they aren't a Chicago team, and that even though some cars are named after native Americans, sadly, this one was not.

  5. Oh, and I almost forgot - I missed the other meaning of "supply" completely, and needed your analysis to understand what E&H were driving at. Nicely done!

  6. Hi Falcon and all, I found this one on the easy side as well - except for the parsing of the diabolical 4D.  I shrugged and figured I'd just learned a new three-syllable noun - until eventually the penny dropped.

  7. Had a real issue with 4D - was reading clue as Mrs Tomlinson (duh). Favoured 11a. Thanks to E&H and Falcon for the review. 1.5/3 rated.

It doesn't facilitate readability when the Post suppresses the spacing between words to virtually nothing!
